What is the Finnish Adult Education Association FAEA?
Founded in 1969, the Finnish Adult Education Association is an umbrella organisation for non-formal adult education in Finland. Its member organisations are the Association of Adult Education Centres, the Finnish Folk High School Association, the eleven popular organisations working in the field of liberal adult education which maintain Finland's eleven study circle centres, the KVS Foundation and the Swedish-speaking organisation Svenska Folkskolans Vänner.
FAEA's main areas of responsibilities are the following:
1. Securing the working conditions of Adult Education
FAEA tries through negotiations, initiatives and reports to further the cause of non-formal Adult Education in Finland by securing economical means for its member organisations, informing the public and initiate debate. FAEA is actively engaged in discussion with the Ministry of Education on the future development of the field.
2. International Contacts
FAEA is a member of
the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA). FAEA has been operating as the Information and Documentation Office of EAEA since 1993. FAEA is developing information structures to better serve the EAEA membership. The Socrates funded ALICE Database Web Service is also updated and maintained by FAEA.
In the Nordic context FAEA works together with its sister organisations in Denmark, Norway and Sweden to promote the use of the Nordic Folk Academy, to engage in projects initiated by the Nordic Council and lately to expand cooperation with the Baltic states.
3. Continuing Education for Adult Educators
Professional adult educators get their basic training in the Universities. Further education for adult educators forms a growing segment of FAEA's activities. The FAEA arranges study trips abroad in order to offer adult educators a chance to gain new ideas and insights.
FAEA has also been one of the initiators and forces behind a five-year national campaign called Knowledge and Competence in Non-Formal Adult Education (VSOP).
